Mark Philpotts, “The Ranty Highwayman” is a chartered civil engineer with over 20 years’ experience of highway design, construction and maintenance. A Fellow of the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation, Mark has worked for a contractor, a developer and two local authorities and currently works for a local highway authority managing a range of highway improvement projects, including infrastructure to enable walking and cycling.
Mark is a passionate advocate for the reworking of urban streets to enable local active travel and considers there is an urgent need for long-term planning and funding to facilitate change. Writing in the Highways Magazine, Mark discusses the use of NAL Retention Sockets for traffic signals and signposts and how they make life easier in the event of a knock-down and simplifying upgrade works.
